Teaching Philosophy

As a nursing professor at The City University of New York School of Professional Studies who focuses on LGBTQ+ health issues, my teaching philosophy centers around creating a safe and inclusive learning environment where all students feel respected, heard, and valued. I believe that Nursing education should not only focus on technical skills but also on cultivating empathy, compassion, and cultural competence.

My approach to teaching involves a student-centered and interactive style that encourages critical thinking and active participation. I believe that students learn best when they are actively engaged in the learning process, and I strive to create a classroom atmosphere that encourages open discussion and respectful debate. I also utilize a range of teaching methods, such as case studies, simulations, and group projects, to help students apply theoretical concepts to real-world scenarios and develop practical skills that they can use in their future practice.

Central to my teaching philosophy is the recognition of the unique health needs and challenges that LGBTQ+ individuals face. I aim to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the social, cultural, and historical factors that shape LGBTQ+ health, as well as the clinical skills and knowledge needed to provide competent and compassionate care. I believe that Nursing education should prioritize the health needs of marginalized communities and strive to reduce health disparities.

In addition, I believe that Nursing education should prioritize the development of ethical, professional, and leadership skills. As a role model, I strive to exemplify these qualities in my teaching and mentorship, encouraging students to be advocates for their patients and communities, and empowering them to be leaders in their field.

Ultimately, my teaching philosophy centers around the belief that nursing education has the power to create positive change in the world. Through creating a safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environment, I hope to inspire and equip students with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to make a difference in the lives of all individuals and communities but especially for those who identify as part of marginalized communities.
