Statement of Commitment
As an Assistant Professor of Nursing at the City University of New York School of Professional Studies, I am committed to intersectional diversity, equity, and inclusion. I recognize that diversity enriches our learning and practice environments, and that intersectionality is critical in understanding the complex and multifaceted experiences of our students, colleagues, and communities. I am grateful to have been honored in the initial cohort of CUNY SPS EDI Ambassadors in September 2023.
I am committed to fostering a welcoming and inclusive classroom and clinical environment where all students and colleagues feel valued, respected, and supported. I will continue work to create opportunities for students and colleagues to share their diverse perspectives and experiences and to engage in critical dialogue that challenges stereotypes and biases.
I will continue to integrate diverse perspectives and experiences into my teaching and research, recognizing that intersectionality is an essential aspect of nursing practice. I will strive to be mindful of the ways in which systemic oppression and marginalization impact the health outcomes of our patients and communities, and I will work to promote equity and social justice in all aspects of my work. For me, DEI is not an event, a moment, or a semester of work – indeed it encompasses every aspect of my life. As the feminist movement popularized in the 1970s, “the personal is political,” and I live that every day. From the committees that I choose to join at work, to my community organizing and activism, I am an outspoken advocate for the most vulnerable among us. As a Registered Nurse and as a human, I believe strongly in the strength that we have when we join together so that “all boats rise.”
I believe that promoting intersectional diversity, equity, and inclusion in nursing education and practice is critical for creating a just and equitable society, and I am committed to advancing these principles in all of my roles as a nurse, educator, and researcher, through my work with the CUNY SPS Committee on Inclusion, Equity, and Diversity, the CUNY LGBTQI+ Council, and beyond! Selected projects include the Faculty Initiative of the CIED, in which we create programming around issues of DEI that brings faculty together in action; and a successful New York City Council-funded grant proposal that brought CUNY SPS into the CUNY-wide LGBTQ+ Consortium for the 2023-2024 academic year.
