Commitment of Service to the Nursing department, School of Professional Studies, City University of New York, and Community

Academic service is a crucial component of my career. I have proudly served the Nursing department, School of Professional Studies, The City University of New York, and my  community. Included in this service are a wide variety of fulfilling and rewarding experiences that will be central in my continued work.

To begin, I have actively served my Nursing department by collaborating with colleagues to promote and enhance the department’s educational and research missions. Specifically, I have participated in committees, provided mentorship and collegiality to colleagues, and engaged in departmental events and initiatives. For instance, I have served as the Faculty Advisor to the Student Nurses Association and as Editor-in-Chief of the CUNY SPS Nursing Pulse newsletter.

In addition to serving my department, I have also engaged in academic service to the School of Professional Studies and to the university. This has involved working to advance the institution’s goals and objectives by participating in faculty governance (CUNY SPS Governing Council), serving on university committees (such as the CUNY LGBTQ+ Council), and engaging in interprofessional collaboration with colleagues from other departments and colleges.

Lastly, I have also engaged in academic service to the broader Nursing community by working with other healthcare professionals and organizations to improve health outcomes for individuals and communities. Specifically, I have participated in community-based initiatives, volunteered for local health events, and provided education and outreach to community organizations. One of my most fulfilling experiences has been organizing a social and health support group for transgender and non-binary youth and their families. Though I am no longer involved with it, it continues to thrive!

Academic service has been a central component of my CUNY Nursing career. By serving my department, college, university, and community, I have been able to make a positive impact on the Nursing profession and the health of underserved individuals and communities.
